  1. Maria Louisa Long was born 18 Feb 1843, Co. Cork James Howe, spouse was born about 1840, Kilrush, Co Clare, Ireland. He was an Able Seamen, Royal Navy.
    Children:
Jemima Constance, born 16 Nov 1864, Tarbert, Kerry.
Robert Charles Howe, born 20 Sep 1866, Kilnaughtin. Co. Kerry.

Maria Louisa’ mother is Jemima Morris, daughter of William Morris, Boatman. Maria Louisa’ father is Patrick Long, coastguard, born in Cork, worked in the coastguard stations in Kilkee, co. Clare and Tarbert co Kerry.
They left Ireland for South Africa. If the country was not suitable, they could well decided to join other Long siblings who went to USA.

  2. This is a lesson in not leaving a stone unturned!!
I think I have found James and Louisa Long not in South Africa but the US. Yes , as you might expect in a 1900 Index of Omaha City, Douglas County, Nebraska. Although her full name is Maria Louisa, in this index she is Louisa:

Forgot to note B/P for the last 4 children. Will send this info. directly. As you can see these children are the last five of their 10. One of the 10 is deceased. If this is your family you might be able to find them in Illinois between 1869 and 1874. The 1870 census may have something on the family, particularly the elder group.

  3. All the children were born in Illinois. There were others born in the US between 1869 and 1874. They would be old enough to have married and settled down somewhere, other than with parents. All of these kids are single. What say you?

  4. Jemima Morris, born 4 Jan 1822 in Rush, Co.Dublin.
Patrick Long , born 1810(abt) in Cork, Co. Cork
    Married 11 Sep. 1843, Kilkee, C. Clare.

These are the children of Jemima Morris and Patrick Long that I have found so far.

1 Maria Louisa Long, born 18Feb 1843, Cork, Co. Cork.
2Jemima Margaret Long, born5 Aug 1849, Tarbert., Co. Kerry.
3Henrietta Alice Long, born 15 Jun 1861, Tarbert, Co. Kerry.
4Bessie Long, born (abt) 1863, Tarbert, Co. Kerry.
5 Edwin Robert Long,18 Apr 1865,Tarbert, Co. Kerry.

There are 5 sons still to be found. They had 10 children, 6 sons and 4 daus.Would be great to go to Dublin again to search the Archives.(if I had the means.)

Found marriage: Edwin Long, Mount Ayr, Newton, Indiana, age 40 to Lillian Brown, Mount Ayr, Newton, Indiana, on 11 Oct 1905. They were married in Chicago, the state
    of Illinois.

  5. I have found a birth certificate for Laura Henrietta Howe born in Chicago in 1881. Her parents listed are Jame Howe B/P England and Marie Long, B/P Ireland. I just have a feeling these are your people. I am going to search for Birth Certificates for the others, and see if these might have Louisa on them or Maria Louisa. If this does occur the problem may be solved.

Also I came across a marriage certificate in Chicago for Robert C. Howe and Emma Jamison, dated 31 Mar 1891, he is 25 and she is 19. What a debacle indeed. Are you absolutely sure that James Howe was born in Ireland? Anyway pull these names up on the web.. See what you think. Jen

  6. No birth certificates for any of Louisa and James Howes children mentioned in the 1880 census of Chicago Ill. and the 1900 census of Omaha, Nebraska. Will keep looking for Howe family members in Nebraska 1920 census. May even look in findagrave.com for Omaha cemeteries. Maybe I can find them there.

  7. Jen, your determination in searching our ancestors; ploughing up counties and states, looking for that proverbial ‘stone’ or census is your unique quality.

  8. 1 Feb 2010. I have researched hard and long with James Howe and have found him in England records with corresponding birth dates and found many Howe families also moved to Ireland. My original research has been many years ago; when I found his marriage to Maria Louise Long, in Kilrush, Co. Clare. Ireland, I concluded without further search that James and his father Robert Howe came from Kilrush, a terrible presumption. With no more obstinancy from me, I agree your records are correct. Have found an ommission, another child Jemima Constance Howe, born 16 Nov. 1864, Tarbert, Co. Kerry. Ireland.

  11. You are to be congratulated! One key to these discoveries is the indexing project of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints. I am so amazed at what these indexers the world over have done, searching microfilm tirelessly and putting the information into a huge “archive” for searchers such as ourselves to help us find our ancestors. Perhaps a word of appreciation would be the thing to do.

By the way, I like what you have done with your blog. Very nice look indeed.

  12. Jen, you may be confused with Jemima and Patrick Long who had 10 children. I have found 5 of them. After Jemima died some left for USA, some with their father or looked for better locations in Ireland.

  13. Yes, I know the Longs had ten children. But as your Howe family shows they also had 10. My confusion is the two Lauras. One Laura E. and the other Laura Henriette. Are they one and the same?
